Nenagh Castle & Grounds

Nenagh Castle can be counted as one of the finest examples of a cylindrical keep in Ireland. It forms the northern part of a pentagonal court, with two strong towers on each angle and a gatehouse on its southern side.

The keep, 30 metres in height and 20 feet thick at the base, along with the partial ruins of the gatehouse and one tower are all that have survived. The castle is the original settlement in the town. The Keep is due to be open to the public in summer 2012.

About Nenagh

Nenagh is located in County Tipperary in the mid-west of Ireland and in the Ecclesiastical dioceses of Killaloe. It is the county town for Tipperary North and has population of 8,023 people according to the the 2011 Irish census. Historically Nenagh was a market town and its name is derived from the Irish An Aenagh Urmhumhan meaning 'The Fair Of Ormond', with Urmhumhan and first ‘a’dropped in each word. The town is geographically located west of Nenagh River which empties into Lough Derg at Dromineer 9km away. The Silvermine Mountains are located to the south of the town with the highest peak of Keeper Hill at 694m. The Arra Mountains are located to the west with Tountinna the highest peak at 457m.
